Subsea Spreader Beams FAQs

What are Subsea Spreader Beams used for?

Subsea Spreader Beams are used for lifting and lowering heavy loads beneath the surface of the water, including subsea structures, pipelines, umbilicals and risers. They are typically deployed in offshore and subsea construction, decommissioning and installation projects where strong, stable and corrosion-resistant lifting equipment is essential.

What makes Modulift’s Subsea Spreader Beams different from standard spreader beams?

Modulift’s standard Modular Spreader Beams are manufactured using circular hollow sections and can be used subsea to depths of up to 150 metres. The Subsea Spreader Beam range instead uses an open section design, which eliminates the risk of cavity or pressure issues and makes it suitable for deeper water submersion. Both ranges are finished with a durable coating for saltwater environments.

What capacities do your Subsea Spreader Beams support?

Our Subsea Spreader Beam range supports lifting capacities of up to 570 tonnes, with a variety of standard sizes as well as custom-engineered solutions to suit specific subsea lifting operations.

Can Modulift supply custom subsea lifting solutions?

Yes. In addition to off-the-shelf modular Subsea Spreader Beams, Modulift’s in-house engineering team can design and manufacture bespoke lifting equipment, including multipoint configurations for risers and umbilicals, tailored to a project’s specific requirement

Can Subsea Spreader Beams be fitted with ROV shackles?

Yes. Modulift’s Subsea Spreader Beams can be fitted with ROV shackles where required, supporting remote handling in deepwater and subsea installation operations.

Are your Subsea Spreader Beams certified?

Subsea Spreader beams are classed as lifting accessories and are subject to strict design, manufacturing and in-service regulations, which vary slightly by region.

In the UK and EU, spreader beams must be designed and manufactured to meet BS EN 13155 (Cranes, Safety, Non-fixed load lifting attachments) and BS EN 1993-1-1 (Eurocode 3), and must comply with the EC Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC. In use, they fall under the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER) and the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER), which require regular thorough examination.

In the US, below-the-hook lifting devices are designed to ASME B30.20 and ASME BTH-1. In Australia, the relevant standard is AS 4991 (Lifting Devices). Internationally, ISO 17096 covers load lifting attachments for cranes, and offshore or marine lifts are frequently designed to DNV Standard for Certification DNV-ST-0378.

Modulift’s Subsea Spreader Beams are DNV Type Approved up to 570t capacity and are designed in accordance with all of the standards above, with additional third-party verification available for project-specific requirements.

Can Subsea Spreader Beams be reused for multiple projects?

Yes. The modular nature of Modulift’s Subsea Spreader Beams means they can be disassembled, reconfigured and reused across different projects, providing long-term value and flexibility compared with single-use lifting solutions.
